Discarded: Daily Views of Trash is a project that works to bring attention to daily trash consumption. My goal to make art more regularly and examine the growth from a consistent body of work inspired the project. The name, which plays on Hokusai’s One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, pays homage to the tradition of capturing a similar subject matter in many different views. The project began as a month-long challenge in 2021 to create a painting of trash every day to participate in a personal form of climate action when protests were unable to commence. After the end of the initial month, I decided to continue painting to bring light to the significant amount of trash we easily throw away. Once I created a substantial body of work, I chose to share the concept of repetition and climate awareness art with my community. I developed a lesson curriculum based on my project. I am presently teaching the curriculum to third-grade classes at the local elementary school. I teach students about the negative impacts of trash in greenhouse gas-producing landfills and how we can reduce unnecessary production through properly recycling and composting.
